Nestled in the heart of New York City’s vibrant SoHo district, Sui Yoga is more than just a hot yoga studio – it is a hub for wellness and mindful connections. The name "Sui" draws inspiration from the Latin term "sui generis," meaning "unique, of its own kind," as well as the Japanese word for the water element. Sui Yoga's mission is to nurture each individual’s unique potential while fostering the joy and growth that comes from a connected community.
The 6,000 square foot, two-level space is bathed in natural light and adorned with lush greenery, creating a tranquil oasis in the bustling city. With two expansive studios featuring restorative Himalayan salt walls and thoughtfully designed lighting systems, Sui Yoga is a space designed to heal and inspire. Modern locker rooms with 12 showers stocked with eco-friendly, all-natural bath products add to the comfort of the experience. Additionally, the on-site café offers a selection of nourishing bites and beverages to sustain clients throughout the day.
Every element of the studio’s design has been thoughtfully curated, adhering to the principles of biophilic design. This philosophy celebrates the harmonious relationship between humanity and the natural world, encouraging a deeper connection with nature to enhance intuition, restore natural rhythms, and promote tranquility.
The Journey to Sui Yoga
Sui Yoga was founded by Julie Villa and Sven Schneider, who were both drawn to yoga as a way to connect mind, body, and spirit during particularly challenging phases in their lives. For Julie, her journey began after an injury during her training with the Alvin Ailey and Paul Taylor dance companies led her to yoga as part of her rehabilitation. Yoga helped her reconnect with her body and community, ultimately becoming her passion. Sven, a former competitive swimmer, discovered yoga as a practice that balanced strength, focus, recovery, and mental clarity. Together, they opened Sui Yoga in May 2022, during a time when they felt there was a need for a space that emphasized inclusivity and mindfulness, especially after the challenges brought on by the pandemic.
A Welcoming Space for Every Practitioner
Students are drawn to Sui Yoga for its warm, welcoming atmosphere, thoughtfully designed classes, and strong sense of community. The studio has become a space where people feel a sense of belonging, with classes tailored to meet students where they are on their journey. Every instructor brings genuine care and intention to their teaching, helping students find balance and growth in their practice.
The evolution of Sui Yoga has been guided by an organic, community-centered approach. Over time, the studio has introduced more diverse class offerings, expanded its team of passionate teachers, and deepened its community engagement through workshops, events, and its newly launched School of Yoga. Each addition has been thoughtfully designed to enhance the studio's environment and offerings, creating a space that is inclusive, supportive, and constantly evolving.
An Inclusive and Unique Experience
Sui Yoga stands out by blending traditional yoga practices with modern wellness rituals. Each class, workshop, and event is crafted to offer a unique experience, welcoming everyone from beginners to seasoned practitioners. This inclusive approach is grounded in the belief that yoga is not just about physical postures but also about cultivating a sense of mindfulness, connection, and intentional living.
Julie and Sven make it a priority to balance their personal practice with the demands of running a business, integrating yoga into their daily lives through meditation, asana, breathwork, and mindfulness. This commitment to maintaining a personal practice ensures that they bring fresh energy and authenticity to Sui Yoga every day.
Advice for Aspiring Studio Owners
For those considering opening their own yoga studio, Julie and Sven’s advice is to be patient and authentic. Building a studio is not just about creating a physical space; it is about nurturing a community. Challenges will inevitably arise, but trusting in your vision and staying adaptable will help you navigate them. The most important lesson they’ve learned is the value of delegating and building a team that shares the same values and passion.
Founders’ Daily Rituals
For Julie and Sven, their day begins with a mindfulness ritual that ranges from 10 minutes to an hour of meditation and gratitude. This practice sets the tone for the day, bringing focus and intention into every aspect of their lives, both personally and professionally.
